A research team of the Keio University, Kawasaki, has developed an electric vehicle that can run at a maximum speed of 300 km/h and travel a maximum distance of 300 km (at 100 km/h) with a single battery charge. This is a 8-wheeled vehicle with a motor built into each wheel. It is driven with 168 high-performance lithium ion batteries (3.6 V each). The power conversion efficiency is estimated at about 24 % even when taking into account the power plant fuel-to-power conversion efficiency. The incorporation of a motor into each wheel eliminates the engine compartment, and there is no need for any shaft leading to the drive wheels. The battery has been accomodated under the floor, which lowers the centre of gravity and improves the vehicle stability.
