Reduction of aeroengine vibration levels can be achieved. In a case study for the BR700engine four small and relatively inexpensive changes of procedures and parts lead to a reduction of about 50 % of the average HP order vibration level at pass-off. The case study demonstrates the practical usefulness of whole engine modeling to understand system dynamics and in the assessment of ideas and changes prior to expensive engine testing. A condensed prediction tool has demonstrated it's usefulness in a production environment. A lesson learnt in this case study is that theoretical models must be developed and validated to a point where they can be fed with input derived from the manufacturing process (imbalance distributions, geometric imperfections etc.) to provoke the insights that lead to feasible and efficient changes in the system. The price to be paid is the effort in setting up and validating such detailed prediction models.
