In addition to mass, several other factors inherent to pickup and utility vehicle design contribute to increased risk of fatality during front-side crashes. To investigate these factors, a series of six 90-degree front-side crash tests were conducted with both vehicles moving. A Mercury Grand Marquis with a BioSID (biofidelic side impact dummy) was used as the side-struck vehicle. Different variations were made to the striking vehicles, which included a passenger car, a baseline pickup with greater front-end stiffness than the car but comparable mass and ride height, and a pickup with increased mass. The effects of the variations in the striking vehicles were evaluated in terms of the struck and striking vehicles' deformation patterns and accelerations.
