This article reviews the development of aluminium alloys in the construction of passenger rail cars and describes, in detail, the recent A-Train system, a typical example of aluminium train technology. This development makes extensive use of the new joint technology called friction stir welding (FSW). The A-Train's aluminium double skin structure gains stability and high bending rigidity from its structural panels by joining the outside plate and interior plate with truss and rib structures at short intervals. This reduces panel vibration caused by forces trasmitted through the structure and the sound emitted by the structures. Employing thermally bonded damping resin on the ribs and plate of double skin or filling the voids with resin foam enhances the effect of vibration control.The outline and bonding principle of FSW are shown schematically. The characteristics of FSW and FSW materials are described.
