The main function of helmets is to protect the wearer from serious head and neck injury in the event of a crash. However secondary functions such as comfort and ventilation do feature quite highly and which in most cases will be considered by the driver even before the safety aspect. The secondary functions unfortunately compromises the primary function to a certain extent unless detailed design and stress analysis are carried out. Based on the maximum deceleration threshold of 200 g, the current helmet design appears to be adequate for the case of a 45 degree oblique strike impact. The 90 degree impact which represents a 'head-on' impact, would probably require an increase in the thickness and stiffness of the foam liner to lower the injury values. Further results will be presented at the conference. The work carried out involves a combination of impact testing and simulation analysis using an explicit finite element code MADYMO to determine the geometry of the shell and liner which satisfies the primary and secondary functions at the same time. The computer model used would have been validated using initial experimental test results.
