Adhesives used in auto assembly might still be driving on the road to profits. Information provided by experts revealed a pair of particularly strong areas for adhesives in the automotive industry: auto interior and hem flange bonding. Together, these two areas represent approximately 80 percent in value and 82 to 85 percent in actual pounds of use per automobile. The total auto adhesive market in 2001 was valued at USD 490 million and 275 million pounds. Demand for automotive adhesives is forecast to increase 2.2 percent per year to 445 million pounds in 2005, decelerating from the strong pace set during the 1990 to 2000 period. Gains will be promoted by increasig usage on a per-vehicle basis, primarily due to the displacement of mechanical fasteners by structural adhesives. Automotive designers are relying more heavily on adhesives based on the potential for reducing weight and lowering material and assembly costs. The growth rate for adhesives in the interior marketplace has risen at a consistent 4 to 6 percent growth rate annnually over the past decade. Many of the same attributes that adhesives bring to interior bonding, can also be found when using them in the more-mature hem flange bonding segment. Hem flange adhesive bonding has fairly saturated the market, therfore any future growth is dependent upon vehicle production as well as the number of doors and size of doors, hoods and rear deck lids.
