Two new A/F (Air-Fuel-Ratio) F/B (Feed Back) controls using a linear A/F sensor were proposed. One was the individual cylinder A/F F/B control with the DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) algorithm. The other is the confluence point A/F F/B control with the SDT (Smith Dead Time) controller. The individual cylinder A/F F/B control with the DFT algorithm was proposed. Analyzing the linear A/F sensor output with DFT algorithm, from the phase, the cylinder could be identified, where the A/F deviated from stoichiometry, and, from the power, the amount of the error at the cylinder was known, which was estimated by the phase. From experimental results using a real engine, it was shown this controller corrected the A/F errors between cylinders rapidly, in about 3 seconds or less, and preciousy, 1 % or less, and also reduced emission drastically. The engine model was proposed, which consisted of dead-time and first order lag element and was simple and easy to embed. The SDT controller was applied to improve response time and robustness. From experimental results using the real engine, it was demonstrated this controller improved the emission performance, compared with conventional PI controllers.
