A lot of papers give the impression that some percentage of aluminum powder in the high explosive charge can increase the velocities of attached fragments. A detailed investigation on charges with 16 % aluminum content in comparison to not aluminized charges in the 12 kg warhead class shows no increase, but also no loss in fragment velocities and penetration or perforation performance. The loss in detonation velocity and therefore on shock load is compensated by a longer acceleration period of the hotter and heavier reaction products of the aluminized charge. Sensitivity and vulnerability tests show also very similar results. Only the larger and longer lasting fireball gives some preference for the high explosive charge with 16 % aluminum.
