The fabrication of a filament wound composite drilling riser was completed by Spencer Composites Corporation of Sacramento, California. It is the world's first composite riser installed for service. It was installed on the drilling string for the Heidrun Platform located in the North Sea in July 2001. Details of the manufacturing process, testing, and field use are presented in this paper. The riser was designed for a minimum burst pressure of 12,000 psi and an axial load of three million pounds. The riser provides thermal insulation, vibration attenuation, and corrosion resistance in addition to a large weight savings. The riser is 22 inches in diameter and 50 feet long. Each section uses approximately 1500 pounds of 34 msi carbon fiber. A single Riser System would use 150,000 pounds of carbon fiber.
