Optical observation from space - a key economic, scientific and strategic issue - requires high-performance image sensors for on-board optical sensing instruments. This market has long been dominated by CCD technology, but as in the consumer electronics sector, CMOS image sensors are beginning to emerge as a serious alternative. This article begins by outlining the reasons behind the growing challenge from CMOS image sensors in space applications, then goes on to examine the need for special component development in three broad areas: vision, sensing and observation/science. Sensing needs are discussed in detail, and examples given of Supaero and Astrium development work on CMOS image sensors. The article concludes with an overview of the directions taken in current and forthcoming work.
