The power conditioning stage of a traction inverter drive consists of equipment which converts d.c. to a.c. power by switching the d.c. input voltage or current in a predetermined sequence so as to generate an output a.c. voltage or current. In the case of propulsion inverter drives this output is three phase of variable frequency. With auxiliary inverter drives the output can either be single or three phase but of fixed frequency. This lecture is restricted to the former category of inverters. Before looking at the details of the inverter drive it will be beneficial to review some recent applications. Traction propulsion inverter drives, particularly the VSI are expected to continue to be the most popular option for the foreseeable future. Technical advances in semiconductor switching devices and advanced microprocessor based controllers have contributed significantly to making such drives economic and reliable. This has enabled the full realisiation of the benefits of using induction motors in traction applications.
