The aim of the fuel optimal control of continuously variable transmissions is to keep the rate of efficiency as high as possible. The process model of a drive train containing of the engine, the transmission, the power train is derived. The combined system is described by a 6th-order system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The amount of fuel used during the transient operation was minimized by optimal control policy. The optimization was solved by the numerical optimization package DIRCOL of the Technical University of Munich (FRG). The fuel savings by the new method compared to the current used solutions are about 2,5 to 5 %.
