The driving forces of the new 42 V PowerNet are shortly summarized and its impact on the power supply of automotive applications is explained. To meet the requirements of 42V PowerNet applications dc/dc converters are proposed, which employ a new method of control called observer-based adaptive current-mode control (OBACMC). The functional principle of OBACMC and its features are explained. Furthermore, experimental results of a dc/dc converter employing a new developed OBACMC controller are discussed. Finally, a summary is given and conclusions are drawn regarding the impact of OBACMC on the design of future dc/dc converters.
