At the moment, a strong market growth for tire pressure monitoring Systems can be observed. This paper compares the two available System approaches: Indirect Systems determine the tire status from wheel speed differences which are due to the decreased effective roll radius of an under-inflated tire. In contrast, direct systems operate on sensors which are installed in the tires and measure the air pressure and the air temperature in the tire cavity. After this initial comparison, the components and functions of the direct measuring Tire Guard System are discussed where a special focus is put on the optimization of the radio-frequency transmission between the wheel units and the centralized control unit. Finally, an outlook on future direct tire pressure monitoring systems is given.
