The objective of the design, prototyping and test activities presented in this paper was to assess the suitability of the Advance GPS/GLONASS ASIC (AGGA) for spacecraft control applications. The AGGA-2 version is the radiation-tolerant GNSS signal processing ASIC developed by ESA as one of the building blocks of future European GNSS receivers. The AGGA-2 was tested against the requirements of a challenging target mission, the AOCS of a telecommunication constellation platform. Indeed, such a mission combines high accuracy navigation and timing (15 m, 50 ns) and moderate attitude determination accuracy (typically 0.5 degree) needs, so it would particularly benefit from a GNSS receiver based on the AGGA-2. For attitude determination, the innovative hybrid parallel-multiplex scheme patented by ESA was shown to provide decisive advantages compared to the more classical parallel architecture, by delivering good quality drift-free single difference carrier phase measurements suitable for accurate attitude determination (0.2 degree RMS typically). Moreover, the hybrid architecture allows better use of the twelve channels of the AGGA-2 with the tracking of six GPS satellites on four antennas (instead of four GPS satellites on three antennas), which considerably improves navigation and attitude performances.
