Short notice given only substantially as follows: Liftport Inc has been formed in the USA with the aim of developing a so-called 'space elevator'-described as an economically attractive means of accessing space. The current concept is to build a physical link - a carbon nanotube - between a base on Earth and a 'small counterweight space platform'. The composite will provide a physical link reaching 100 000 km (62 000 miles) into space. It is envisaged that the Earth base will be an offshore sea platform in the Pacific and near the equator. Mechanical lift will travel up and down the nanotube ribbon carrying such things as satellites and solar power systems, and eventually people. The elevator is intended to ferry cargo and passengers to and from orbit and in the first stage it should have a daily capacity of about 5 t and be capable of making 200 trips a year. In an announcement by the company it is claimed that this is more than ten times the current capacity of all launch vehicles. To reach low earth orbit each trip will take about four hours, while to reach further out to a geosynchronous orbit would take seven days. Although the creation of the elevator will be costly it is predicted that demand will be huge. Liftport is a private company supported by the National Space Society (NSS) a non-profit organization that promotes the concept of space travel.
