Reducing and recycling automobile shredder residue (ASR) are important to improve the recycling rate of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). In this paper the authors discuss the concept of applying life cycle assessment (LCA) and report the current situation in Japan. LCA is an effective method to evaluate the overall environmental burden and impact of ELVs. It is necessary to conduct the following three processes to analyze and assess the end-of-life stage by LCA: 1. Calculating the environmental burden of scrapping, recycling, and disposal processes. 2. Evaluating recycling affects. 3. Overall assessment of environmental impacts. In order to capture the whole picture of the automobile LCA one of the LCA case studies for ELVs is outlined.
