In recent years the efficiency of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) has increased rapidly. Using red, amber or white LEDs for signal functions is already state of the art and offers new styling possibilities. Since up to 70 lm/Watt and 120 lm/LED for white LEDs are predicted, they become interesting for headlamp functions like low and high beam. Therefore new styles and technical solutions are feasible. Nevertheless, creating LED headlamps is still challenging. In near future, LED fog lamps are feasible which does not just comply with the regulations, but assuage the high expectation of the customers. This LED fog lamps can be very small, the light sources do not fail and it will reduce fuel consumption. The expected high values for future LEDs puts us in the position, to develop low beam modules and complete LED headlamps. For this challenging adventure the main tasks will be the increase of the efficiency of the system, a low overall volume and an extraordinary look, which gives new opportunities to the stylists. Main problems, advantages and disadvantages by creating optical components for a LED headlamp are discussed in the paper.
