Natural fiber mat (NMT) composites are ecologically and energetically beneficial because of their light-weight at high fibre content. As high as 65% of natural fibre can be introduced in NMT composites without increasing the compression pressure significantly. Higher fibre volume enhanced stiffness and impact properties of composites to the target value required for many interior parts applications including instrument panel, headliner, sun visors and consoles. Further enhancement of tensile strength would be required to satisfy the performance requirement for bumper and other semi-structural applications. Fibre length above the critical length of 4 mm has no significant effect on composite strength. In comparison with glass fibre thermoplastics (GMTs), the natural fibre composites show lower tensile strength but has a comparable. In comparison with GMTs, hemp based NMTs have comparable modulus. Due to lower density of natural fibres, the specific modulus of NMTs may even surpass that of GMTs. A modified model has been also developed to investigate the effect of moisture absorption on composite strength.
