The thick-film technique has proved to be a competitive method to realize initiator elements for safety units in cars such as airbags or passenger retention systems. Crash sensors induce, in the case of an accident, a current pulse in this resistive initiator element. As the device is heated up to a critical temperature the explosive detonates and the airbag or the retention system will be released. The heat balance between the heat generating device, the substrate and the explosive is responsible for the performance of the igniter. Pore inclusions in the explosive applied on the initiator element as well as diffusion effects in the resistive element may affect the heat transfer and consequently the performance or reliability of the igniter. These effects have been studied by means of finite element method. As a result of this study the design of the igniter system could be optimized.
