Delta Motor has developed a patented lower cost higher performance traction drive system that can be utilized over a wide range of traction applications. One of the present 33 kW demonstration units has been installed in a Honda CRX automobile (HEV) for field testing operation. The total 33 kW motor-drive weighs less than 115 kilograms. The motor design carefully balanced the stator winding flux vs. the PM stator flux. The rotor magnet structure was selected to achieve the optimum saliency for the PM magnet flux levels and geometry. Higher voltage and correspondingly lower current systems above 230 vdc would simplify the motor design but increase the drive system cost. Higher voltage components currently moving from prototype status to production status may alleviate this problem. The driving course for the Honda CRX was almost 20 kilometers long with 29 stoplights and eleven hill climbs with car speeds varying up to 104 kph (67.6 mph). This vehicle was driven 100 kilometers. The battery pack voltage dropped to 200 vdc. The battery manufacturer indicated that this condition equates to a discharge condition of 50%.
