Laser position sensors were used in optical instruments for measuring distance to observed material objects. A photodiode-based meter was firstly constructed 1989 to measure distances up to 25 mm with a speed of measurements 30/s and an error of 10 micrometer (resolution power 1 micrometer). The meter was successfully tested under comercial conditions in production of the cold-rolled strip (thickness up to 10 mm, error less than 12 micrometer). In 1996, similar measuring device was used for contactless control of face and lateral run-out of road wheels (whipping up to 5 mm, error less than 50 micrometer). The last constructions were offered to the Russian railways for monitoring the driving wheels under operating conditions and are now (since 2002) under testing (measurement speed 30000/s).
