A comparative design study, for optimal induction motors with copper as well as aluminium cages, is performed in a drive application related to electrical vehicle. A procedure based on bicriterial optimisation is proposed. Superiority related to the motor volume and mass at a slightly higher cost in the case of copper cages is shown in the case of standard optimal constructions. An influence of a locked-rotor torque as well as a supplying voltage level on the rated output is analysed.
