The use of frequency control in pump drives in which the load torque is quadratically related to the speed is very effective. Power consumption is considerably reduced on regulating the productivity below the rated value. Experience in developing and introducing specialized variable-speed pump drives in oil pipelines is analyzed. Drives of power up to 3150 kW are currently being introduced. The quality of the converter output is considered, as well as the electromagnetic compatibility of the converters with asynchronous motors. The structure of the converter system proposed includes two power transformers, one connected to the input and the other to the output side of the frequency converter. The frequency converter is based on an autonomous current inverter. Soft recovery thyristors that permit minimum voltage surges when turned off have been developed. Oil-filled transformers from ABB can be connected to the frequency converter without introducing high voltage into the converter container, which significantly simplifies operation for the service personnel. Calculations show the high quality of the converter output voltage, permitting the use of mass-produced ELSIB motors in pipeline pumps. Using a frequency converter ensures energy savings of at least 40 %, compared with direct connection to a 50-Hz grid.
