Over the past few years, the performance of active safety systems (chassis management, steering, brake control and stability systems) and passive safety systems (seat belts, airbags, headrests and the passenger safety cell) has improved substantially, thanks mainly to electronics. However, since development activities in the two sectors - active and passive safety - have been kept largely separate, significant safety potential still remains untapped. The paper presents the objectives of the Active Passive Integration Approach (APIA) project which demonstrates the benefit of linking existing components. In this way, for example, the information provided by one yaw-rate sensor may be used by the ESP and ACC, not only ensuring unparalleled safety but also cutting costs. APIA will allow the driver to master impending hazards and use what time is available to minimize the risk of injury if - despite the driver's best efforts an accident becomes unavoidable. The key software component of APIA is the Safety Control Module, which collects and continuously evaluates the data received from all the individual safety systems and the environmental sensors available in the vehicle. For any given traffic situation, this module implemented as an additional software module in the EBS control unit determines a hazard potential, which reflects the current accident risk. Based on the information of the environmental traffic situation, the driver will be assisted to cope with the traffic hazard by a haptical warning and three increasing brake interventions. Although it will be ten or twenty years before customers can buy a vehicle of this type, the first APIA functions, which will already ensure significant safety improvements, will have reached the production stage in a few years' time.
