This paper presents an overview on the emerging domain of intelligent system services. The author focus on the following observation and its consequences: Based on the evolution of automotive IT systems, a bottom up design approach, mainly focussing on an ECU perspective prevails. New ECUs or new car functions are simply added in this manner to the existing system. System services are constituting an essential part of an automotive IT infrastructure. It is observed, that the current concept of system services is mainly a local concept, directly associated to a single ECU. This represents the historically driven bottom up approach of networked ECUs starting from the single ECU. The authors propose a global, vehicle-wide perspective on system services as well as a software-oriented view, to overcome current limitations. Then, system services have the potential to support a more reliable and robust operation of car functions and to enable their cost optimized, life cycle driven maintenance. System services are distributed, infrastructural functionalities implemented as a client/master system with a central master part and a decentralized client part. The client part resides in any ECU to be operated and administered and should therefore be part of an automotive middleware. The master part instead uses the middleware, i.e. is placed above the middleware abstraction. This approach allows an interoperable, flexible and scalable implementation of system services. Thus intelligent system services represent a paradigm shift towards a more centralized and top down view on an automotive IT infrastructure and software architecture.
