Low-power motors for use in auxiliary drives may have rotors with many poles made of different magnetically hard materials: barium hexaferrit or rare-earth materials such as samarium-cobalt or neodymium-iron-boron composites. The proposed calculation method permits estimates of the magnetic characteristics and a comparison of the two motor designs. The equations used are derived from the equivalent circuit of the magnetic system. For an example with given motor dimensions, the induction in the air gap for both types of the motor are numerically determined. The results show that rare-earth magnets permit significant reduction in rotor mass and moment of inertia, with simultaneous increase in motor torque. The mathematical apparatus permits the design of step or synchronous motors whose parameters and design are competitive in the desired field. The calculation method has been used in formulating design documentation for motors and developing equipment for their mass production.
