The corrosion of aboveground storage tanks (AST) containing fuels and crude oil after 10 to 55 years of service is analyzed. Four corrosion zones including upper part, splash zone, liquid zone, and the bottom part are formed in the inner surfaces of an AST. The corrosion rate (CR) was estimated by measuring the thickness of various parts of the AST with a 26DL Panametrics thickness gauge. It was found that the shell plates (strips) and floating roofs of the gasoline AST experienced severe electrochemical corrosion in the presence of dissolved water and oxygen.
