Two Herrenknecht EPB tunnelling machines of distinct design and a one-pass precast concrete segmental lining are just the start of efforts by managers of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to embark on a new era of mass transit construction for the city. As well as introducing EPB tunnel excavation and one-pass segmental lining to the LA Metro for the first time, construction of the new 9.6 km (6 mile) light rail transit line into East Los Angeles introduces design-build project procurement for the first time and a complete restructure of project and construction management. These changes are adopted to put the past and well-documented problems experienced by previous LA Metro projects well behind the authority and start anew for this and future metro projects and plans. Shani Wallis visited MTA managers in Los Angeles in July to report on this fresh start.
