A key factor affecting hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) performance is the unit that transmits the power of the engine and motor-generator (MG) to the vehicle. Proposed power transfer units include the mechanical transmission of conventional vehicles and an electrical transmission designed for HEVs. The objective of this study was to clarify the impact on fuel economy according to the type of power transfer unit used. The effects of MG power, engine operative range, and power transmission efficiency were examined in particular. Using simulations, fuel economy characteristics were investigated according to the vehicle class and hypothetical driving modes resembling real-world vehicle operation.
