During the last decades the vehicle headlamp has shifted more and more from the function of a basic illumination device to that of a styling component. Several new technology improvements have occurred in the field of automotive front light illumination with a strong influence on costs and light performance. New halogen bulbs, clear outer lenses, high intensity discharge (Xenon) systems, PES and nowadays swiveled light patterns were introduced. Based on an increasing demand for cost reduction in the automotive business, the car manufacturers are looking for solutions to produce economical but attractive lighting devices with basic functionalities. One concept to realise a 'low cost' headlamp is to use one bulb for the two functions of low and high beam. For application on the global market, headlamps have to be built in conformity to at least two different regional legal requirements: ECE and SAE. Up to now dual filament systems are designed to fulfil either the ECE R1 12 or the FMVSS 108 requirements. An additional cost saving would be to use one reflector for both regions. The paper discusses the chances of application of two two types of dual filament bulbs: H13 and H4, which can be used for low and high beam with a good light pattern. The beam pattern with dual filament light source is always a compromise between LB and HB optimization. An additionally required conformity to SAE and ECE would decrease the performance to a significantly lower level. Both single pocket reflector concepts have their specific benefits and shortages. For ECE the H4 is a good choice to realize a single pocket design with a low cost light source. The H 13 has a significantly better lifetime and offers the opportunity to achieve high quality LB road surface illumination. Due to the higher glare level and the restrained design freedom for HB the H13 bulb will in the future basically be used in the NAFTA area.
