The development of a 288 V lithium ion battery for operation in hybrid electrical vehicles is described. The battery is comprised of cylindrical 7.5 Ah high power cells, a modular battery management system (one master, eight slaves), and abuse and failure protection features. The cells are manufactured by a proprietary extrusion process. The active materials have been selected according to their power performance at ambient and at low temperature. The cell has been designed to optimize high power performance. Cycling behavior has been tested with full and power assist cycles. Cycle life has been shown to depend on the depth of discharge. Rate capability was tested between -30 and 40 deg C, and cold cranking power down to -30 deg C.
