This paper presented a new approach of a reconfigurable assembly system for the group of car-under-body assembly. The basic elements of this new concept are special passive fixture elements and the industrial robot. The desired functionality of this concept could be verified by the reconfiguration of the developed virtual assembly system for two comparable components. Thereby could be demonstrated, that the disposable workspace offers still substantial reserves. The existing reserves could be used to manufacture a comparable part of another vehicle type or even the successor model. In this case the reconfigurable fixture already exists and has not to be designed. So the challenge consists in checking whether a component can be manufactured on the existing fixture. Naturally this should be realised with a robot simulation program with implemented FWE. Thus, also the possibilities of collision check, accessibility check and off-line programming of the robots are available. The exceptional advantages of the new concept could be seen in the lower place requirement, the guaranteeing of the desired flexibilities, the opportunities of simulation and the competitive solution.
