A roll-connected suspension configuration is realized by interconnecting two struts with integrated gas chamber and considerably large working area to achieve enhanced roll properties. The analytical formulations for the dynamic forces developed by the struts show that the roll coupling causes enhanced roll stiffness and damping due to the feedback effects of the interconnection. The dynamic force developed by a single strut is strongly dependent upon not only its deflection and velocity response but also on those of the other strut. The results obtained under pure vertical and roll deflections of the connected struts clearly show that the roll coupling yields high roll stiffness and damping when compared to those of the unconnected suspension, while its effect on the vertical stiffness and damping properties is insignificant. The flows through the interconnecting pipes and the feedback effects yield roll damping that is considerably larger than that of an unconnected suspension with an anti-roll bar. While the static roll stiffness of the connected suspension is identical to that of the unconnected struts with an anti-roll bar, the connected suspension exhibits a progressively softening effect. The most significant benefit of the roll-connected suspension lies in its flexibility. The variations in selected strut design and interconnection parameters could help realize significantly higher roll stiffness and nearly linear damping properties, without affecting its load carrying capacity and the vertical mode properties. An increase in the annular area between the piston and the rod could yield significantly higher roll stiffness and roll damping without affecting the vertical properties and the load carrying capacity of the strut. Moreover, variations in the interconnecting pipes diameter could cause nearly linear damping property of the connected struts. The results obtained under two different deterministic excitations further show that the interconnected suspension could help suppress oscillations in the roll response of the vehicle subject to a steady lateral acceleration and a road bump, while its effect on the vertical response is insignificant for the excitation considered. From the results, it is concluded that hydro-pneumatic struts interconnected in the roll-plane offer considerable potential to improve vehicle roll stability limits due to their inherently enhanced roll stiffness and damping properties.
