Mobile ad hoc networking has attracted major attention during the last few years. Simultaneously, the penetration of the Internet changes daily life. FleetNet brings together these two emerging technologies by building up a mobile Internet for the communication with and between vehicles. Thus, FleetNet extends the deployment of the Internet towards the application area of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Communication in ITS is based upon wireless inter-vehicle communication (IVC). As basis for the FleetNet air-interface, UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Time Division Duplex (UTRA TDD) has been chosen for providing the entire range of FleetNet applications. However, to make UTRA TDD a suitable system for FleetNet, the air-interface has to be adapted towards an ad hoc mode. One crucial topic in ad hoc networks is the changing topology with partial connectivity. In these kind of networks hidden stations exist that tend to make quality of service impossible. Furthermore, exposed stations will reduce the capacity in the network. As basis for the FleetNet air interface, UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Time Division Duplex (UTRA TDD) has been chosen and adapted towards an ad hoc mode. In this paper investigations on the performance of the proposed protocols in presence of hidden stations are presented. The investigations were performed by event-driven SDL based simulations. Appropriate methods to reduce conflicts like packet collisions as effects of the hidden station problem were developed and simulated.
