To prevent crashes and activate AEB it is necessary to detect obstacles as soon as possible. An important need for such systems is a sensor for obstacle detection, which has a high resolution and accuracy for localization of the colliding obstacle and a precise tracking capability to determine the velocity and the danger potential of the obstacle. The sensor must have a high degree of reliability under all driving conditions. A sensor which meets the requirements above is a Laser scanner like the new developed ALASCA (Automotive Laser scanner). From the measured distance values of the Laser scanner objects are built and tracked from scan to scan. In the paper the three steps of the tracking algorithm are described. The objects seen in the last scan are predicted to the current scan. In the association process the scan data of the current scan are associated to the known objects and the object attributes are updated (innovation). The detailed information of Laser scanner data combined with an object tracking algorithm gives a good base for many automotive applications and specific for automatic emergency braking. The AEB application is implemented and successfully tested on test vehicles.
