SSW (Simulated seawater) HPT (hydropressure testing), which is sensitive to oceanic cable defects and faults, is the only test that can give highest assurance to systems operating in deep seawater, with required electrical IR (insulation resistance). SSW is 30 to 550 times more conductive than freshwater testing and tends to be more reactive with any metallic electrode, especially under applied voltages. It is also found to be more corrosive than freshwater if there is dissolved oxygen. SSW corrosion cells act as batteries that can be charged and discharged anywhere in the test circuit. Ionic diffusion, concentration, and alignment is also possible in SSW. The SSW test results conducted on a field case study including a suspected seawater leak in electro fiber optical cable showed electrical problem in the cable. The defects were successfully located by freezing the electrolyte of the cable and observing the changes using a novel technique.
