The authors have developed the prototype for a winshield display (WSD) with stereovision as a human-machine-interface (HMI) for active safety. The information is superimposed over the driving scene via WSD. Drivers can understand the information with minimum of eye movements and reaccomodation time. The WSD also contributes to reducing the driver's recognition time and workload. The authors plan to develop a variety of applications such as visibility enhancement (night vision) and route guidance via navigation system, etc. The most important feature of the superimposed displays is image position control in the three-dimensional space, especially in the depth direction. The effects of various depth perception factors using WSD prototype have been investigated. It was found that it is possible to control the image position in the depth direction considering both physiological and psychological factors such as convergence, binocular parallax, composition and size. The control of the image position in three-dimensional space rises several problems. Tiredness and occlusion of the front scene are important ones. The authors intend to research human characteristics of image perception to solve these problems and realize the WSD concept.
