For the last decades passive vehicle safety systems have contributed very much in reducing injuries or fatalities related from vehicle accidents. Passive restraint systems such as belts and airbags have reached almost a 100 % installation rate, providing an optimum of protection for the vehicle occupants. A further increase of road traffic safety requires a new generation of sensing systems. Sensors that are capable to address the area of active safety, such as pre-crash sensors are required for future safety systems. The information that is collected with this type of pre-crash sensors is used for various independent functions to increase safety of the occupants during normal driving: 1. Activation of brakes, pre-fill - pre-brake and brake support in stop & go situations. 2. Activation of reversible restraint devices in pre-crash phases such as Motorized Seat Belts, anti-submarining seat cushions, knee bolsters and side paddings. Even the activation of non-reversible systems is possible by using the potential of a sensor fusion system. By combining a distance measuring system and a vision based sensor, a much higher reliability of the information can be achieved, compared to the information derived from a single sensor. A combination of the distance information with the shape analysis of a vision system can give very precise information about the type of object, the position in front of the vehicle and the distance and much more. With this primary information in combination with additional secondary informative e.g. vehicle speed, steering angle etc. it is possible to activate non-reversible devices for occupant protection as well as pedestrian protection systems. Even an automatic emergency braking would be a possible function.
