When applying software product family techniques to modelling software for electronic controller units (ECUs) used in automotive applications, problems arise when concrete software products are to be extracted from models. This so called configuration process is error-prone and unsafe because software engineers have to select the right classes from class repositories and have to decide which classes comprise a certain product. Combining the wrong classes in a product, i.e.combining wrong functionalities, has massive negative consequences on safety and reliability of the software itself and may compromise the safety of the passengers. In this paper the authors describe these configuration problems in detail and make a proposal for model extensions that help to constrain class combinations and allow for a safer, more reliable and unambiguous configuration process. These model extensions are used to describe formal modelling rules that are used to validate models and configurations based on these models. This leads to products that are safer in terms of dependencies between functionalities because these dependencies can be met in a more reliable way. Thus customer requirements fulfilment can be verified and proved by the software manufacturer. Validated models and configurations are then used to automatically generate source code that is safer and more reliable than code generated from non-validated models and configurations respectively.
