This paper presents a methodical approach for the development of a situation classification algorithm for a traffic situation and road infrastructure adaptive ACCsystem. The basis for this are driver perceptions and sensor data, which are recorded in driving tests. The test design and the analysis methods are described. The situation classification is assisted by attributes of a digital map in combination with a GPS-system. The current driving situation and the traffic flow are included into the classification process by using distance sensors. The situation classification algorithm determines online a driving situation, which is considered in the ACC-control algorithm.
