With the start-up of the new A4, Audi offers the completely revised V6 3.2-l-FSI engine with the Audi valvelift system as the top-of-the-range engine option. The main development targets involved a rigorous revision with regard to friction and fuel consumption, while at the same time increasing power output and torque. The fundamental concept of the basic model series was adopted in order to retain its key advantages such as the extremely compact design, the high degree of modularisation and the high levels of synergy in production and assembly within the series of V-format petrol engines. The four-valve cylinder heads are derived from the standard production components of the 3.2-l-FSI engine. The essential innovations have taken place on the intake side, for the integration of the Audi valvelift system. The intake camshaft is comprised of a basic shaft with cam-pieces pushed onto it. In addition to the Audi valvelift system, other measures have also been employed to reduce frictional losses: -tri-oval sprockets to reduce the level of force in the chain drive, - a volume flow-regulated oil pump in combination with two-stage pressure control, - reduced piston ring pretensioning, - reduction in the size of the water pump. The engine delivers 195 kW at 6500 rpm and 330 Nm across a wide engine speed range from 3000 to 5000 rpm. Fuel consumption for the MVEG cycle is very low, at just 9.2 l/k100 km.
