Laser technology, as typified by CO2 and low power YAG lasers, has been applied to vehicle production since the mid-1980s. Centering mainly on the welding of tailored blank materials, power train parts and the like, the application of laser material processing has been expanded in all directions to all processes in part processing, part assembly and vehicle assembly. As a result, several hundred laser machines are now currently operating. In addition, the introduction of new types of diode lasers, and further development of laser material processing technology since the year 2000 has ushered in a new age of laser material processing and enabled its spread to other fields. Diode lasers are mainly being applied to plastic welding due to their small size and high efficiency, and diode laser pumped YAG lasers are applied to the welding of vehicle bodies due to their small spot size and high flexibility. This article describes the recent application of laser material processing to vehicle parts and analyses the rigidity improvement effect of continuous laser welding used for body weight reduction. Application examples are also discussed.
