The purpose of this study is to develop an adaptive control algorithm for the automotive semi-active suspension system in which the control weight between ride comfort and vehicle attitude varies according to driving situation. Firstly a control algorithm which can improve both ride comfort and vehicle attitude is proposed by separating the control range in terms of frequency domain. Furthermore, the gain scheduling control theory is applied by changing these frequency weights according to various driving situations in terms of time domain. Secondly, the neural network and the genetic algorithm are applied to design a system which can determine the gain scheduling parameter for the design of gain schedule parameters. Finally an adaptive control system for automotive semi-active suspension system is designed by integrating these proposed methods. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed control method, the full vehicle model is constructed by considering the bilinear characteristics of spring and damper variable suspension. As a result of numerical simulation, it was indicated that the proposal controller maintains ride comfort compared with the conventional skyhook controller and improves the vehicle attitude change caused by steering and driving.
