For more than 12 years electronic networks are part of the CLAAS machinery. Every year new functions were added, so the electronic concept grew steadily. A new concept was required to fulfil all the additional functions. Based on the experience in electronic systems within agricultural machinery more flexibility and cost reduction was required as well. The paper shows how this concept was developed and how the requirements were fulfilled. The concept can now be found in a range of product lines like combines, forage harvester and tractors. The hardware structure, the network concept and the main components will be shown. The corresponding software structure is an important part of the concept. The goal was to reuse as much software components as possible, based on developments according to standards and available standard software. Tools that support this process and also the software development process itself will be presented. The experiences (lessons learned) with this concept and approach will be found in the conclusion.
