Fine grained boron carbide (B4C) ceramic disks of different grain sizes were consolidated using plasma pressure compaction (P(2)C(R)) method. Static and dynamic indentations were conducted to determine the strain rate sensitivity of indentation hardness and fracture toughness as a function of grain size. It was noted that the indentation-induced cracks during static indentation were transgranular in nature with zig-zag pattern within each grain. This zig-zag pattern is speculated to follow the cleavage planes in the ceramic and results in the formation of intermittent parallel crack facets. On the other hand, indentation-induced cracks under dynamic indentations showed relatively straight cracks with no zig-zag pattern within the grains. A finite element based computational framework based on fracture mechanics of brittle materials has been developed to model the observed zig-zag crack propagation pattern under static indentations. Cohesive zone modeling in conjunction with a novel formulation termed as generalized cohesive element method has been employed to model and resolve the intragranular crack motion in these ceramics. Preliminary results of simulations are presented and future research directions are summarized.
