Marine fouling of naval ships creates increased frictional drag, loss of manoeuvrability, frequent dry docking and introduction of invasive marine species to new regions. Historically, the most effective marine antifouling coatings employed toxic metal compounds such as tributyltin (TBT) or copper to combat fouling. Though they are very effective, the release and accumulation of these compounds in ocean waters is harmful to the environment. The current ban on the use of highly effective TBT-containing antifouling coatings has created a need for more intensive research into environmentally-friendly alternatives. A combinatorial workflow has therefore been developed specifically for marine coating R&D. it includes high throughput (HT) methods for all aspects of coating research such as experimental design, polymer precursor synthesis and characterisation, coating formulation, coating deposition, curing, testing and data analysis. A key component of this system is discussed in detail. This comprises a group of HT biological tests based on a range of marine organisms such as bacteria, algae and barnacles. Both antifouling character and fouling release properties of marine coatings can be determined.
