Electronically controlled continuously slipping wet clutches are used in applications where torque transfer control is demanded, e.g. in lock up clutches of automatic transmissions or differentials. In order to develop control software, knowledge regarding the friction and what influences it during the life of the clutch is important. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether there is a more comprehensive way to describe and predict results from friction tests in a wet clutch system. This is important because the coefficient of friction is determined by a number of parameters, which also influence each other. The investigation comprises tests in a wet clutch test rig and important parameters influencing coefficient of friction is presented and discussed. A Stribeck approach is suggested, analysed and compared to the commonly used methods. An improved approach is then investigated. Results confirm that viscosity-temperature relationship is less important than additive-temperature effects on friction. The investigation also shows that adapting these methods can reduce the amount of testing needed during development of a clutch and clutch control software.
