Stress Engineering (SE) in welding refers to the application of stress fields around the weld zone to control and or manipulate the welding stresses. The objective is to control the final residual stress field and therefore distortion. In the United Kingdom there is large integrated programme investigating SE techniques entitled Stress Engineering Applied to Large Structures (SEALS). Several SE techniques have been developed including global and local mechanical tensioning and thermal processes. In the SEALS programme these techniques have been investigated and applied to various welding processes including Friction Stir Welding and several fusion welding processes. Target applications include aerospace and naval structures with a range of material types, thicknesses and welding geometries. In this paper an overview of the SEALS programme will be given along with highlights of the results to-date. These highlights include the demonstration of linear control of the residual stress field using global mechanical tensioning, the application to the top surface of a cryogenic C02 spray during fusion welding and the use of rolling techniques. Many of the techniques have shown that flat welds can be achieved so an assessment is being made in terms of industrial applicability and the ability to scale up to full size applications.
