A project named Hull Identification System for Maritime Autonomous Robotics (HISMAR) is funded by European Commission for the hull inspection and foul removal from the ship owners and maritime maintenance industry. Marine growth on ships is a huge environmental and financial problem for marine industry, and HISMAR offers a unique solution to both of these problems. HISMAR uses two cleaning heads, with a cleaning width of 1 m, to remove debris from the hull as the transverse the hull in both forward and reverse direction. The autonomous robot employs a modular design that features a central drive module and separate cleaning modules. It is umbilically connected to a floating support platform that contains the power generator, the debris extraction and wastewater recovery and nullification system. The researchers are integrating the robot's optical and magnetic systems into the navigational software, and testing the navigation and magnetic systems of a robot prototype on a mock-up of a ships hull in dry dock.
